Papaver somniferum
‘Black Swan’ is too gorgeous to tuck away into a collage of other flowers, with its intricate, finely cut petals as dark as cabernet. Sow it along a path you frequent or in a large container where you can admire its richly colored 3″–5″ semi-double blossoms on graceful, curved, swan-like necks, while bees savor the nectar. Plants grow up to 24″-36′ tall, 9″-12″ wide, and produce flowers that bloom in summer. Prefers full to partial sun exposure. Attracts pollinators and is deer resistant. Outdoors: Sow 4-6 weeks before your average last frost date, or as soon as soil can be worked, or early to mid-fall for bloom the following spring.
